IMAGES ET DEMOCRATIE
Les Congolais face au cinéma et à l’audiovisuel.  Une histoire politico-culturelle du Congo des Belges jusqu’à la République Démocratique du Congo (1896-2006).

auteur: Guido Convents   images_et_democratie.jpg

The Congolese have a fascinating filmographic and audiovisual history. Since the emergence of film they have been faced with this invention, which was both an art and means of propaganda for the earlier colonial rulers and later for president Mobutu.  This meant that there was no free access to the making of films, nor was the audience free to view them. Film and television were the tools of the regime and were used to demonstrate and support their power. After the fall of Mobutu initiatives have come thick and fast.
Guido Convents’ book throws light on the protagonists of Congolese audiovisual culture, as regards the government, the audience, the directors, the interpreters and distributors. He looks into the relationship between the Congolese people and the images they produce, and notes that there are many causal connections. The Congolese are very well aware of the relationship between their democratic development and freedom of audiovisual production.
Biography
Historian and anthropologist, Guido Convents is a renowned expert on films from the developing countries. He is a member of SIGNIS (Catholic Association for Communication and Media). He has authored several works on colonial and African films. In 1980 he began publishing regularly on topics affecting the entire great lakes region: Congo, Rwanda and Burundi. Along with Guido Huysmans he is the linchpin of the Africa Film Festival, and many other initiatives designed to preserve and promote the film and audiovisual heritage of Congo.

The book counts 488 pages, 200 photos, a 20-page bibliography, filmography, index, and extensive (500) footnotes. Only french version.
