A COSTA DOS MURMURIOS
The Murmuring Coast, based on the novel of the same name by Lidia Jorge, is the first feature film by Margarida Cardoso (°63), who is better known for documentaries. With this return to Mozambique where she grew up, Cardoso also produces one of the first films depicting the trauma of the Portuguese colonial past. In this subtle, multifaceted drama, largely made up of dark departures, pretty, self-willed Evita travels to Mozambique to marry Luis, a soldier in the colonial army. However, he appears less and less like the promising young man she met in Lisbon. Relationship problems at the heart of darkness are a metaphor reflecting the inescapable decline of the colonial regime.
