Aya, a young Ivorian woman in her early thirties, says 'no' on her wedding day to everyone's surprise, after which she starts a new life in China. She finds work in the tea shop of Cai, a 45-year-old Chinese man. As he teaches her the ancient art of tea, their relationship slowly grows into a tender love. But can their affair survive their troubled past and the prejudices of others?
Ten years after his successful film Timbuktu (2014), Abderrahmane Sissako is making a new film, which unfolds as a story of female self-empowerment mixed with a smouldering cross-cultural love story.
The film will be screened as the opening film of the Africa Film Festival in Ghent on the 27th of April and then travel on to Leuven.
