Buddha in Africa

Enock/Alu, a Malawian boy raised in a Buddhist orphanage, struggles to retain his cultural identity. Once the star performer with dreams of becoming a martial arts hero like Jet Li, he is now in his final year of school and has to make a choice: reconnect with his African culture and language or sign up for five years study in Taiwan. Schafer's documentary raises questions about cultural indoctrination and the price of charity. The film provides a unique insight into Chinese soft power in Africa, reminiscent of the Christian mission stations during colonial times.
