Butembo, History of a Culture

This documentary "Butembo, History of a Culture", tells the story of the genesis of civilization in one of the largest current cities of North-Kivu Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo, its people, its origins, culture, economy, openness to the world. It also talks about the history of Butembo which was a village, became a small city and later transformed into a Town. In addition to that, It reflects the tradition culture revival, birth of civilization and origin of Yira people. It decribes some challenges of Butembo Town such as Massacres of Kikyo. It goes ahead to talk about the outcome of new language called chabibo.

Five films were nominated for the Africa Film Festival 2023 Prize of the Flemish UNESCO Commission on the theme of Intangible Heritage. This is part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Preserving intangible heritage can contribute to strengthening cultural identity, social cohesion of communities and promoting sustainable development. It can also promote other SDGs, such as quality education and Peace and Justice.
This year, the Flemish UNESCO Commission celebrates its 20th anniversary. We will celebrate this anniversary year on the closing night, 6 May; where we will announce the winner of the eighth edition of the UNESCO competition.
