Coconut Head Generation

Every Thursday, a group of students from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria's oldest university, organises a film club, transforming a small lecture theatre into a political agora where they hone their views and develop a critical discourse. Coconut Head Generation, a derogatory expression for narrow-minded, brainless youth, takes on a whole new meaning when the students turn this stigma on its head to claim their freedom of thought.

Alain Kassanda, a native of Kinshasa, left the DRC for France at the age of 11. After studying communications, he became a cinema programmer in Paris. He moved to Ibadan, Nigeria, where he made Trouble Sleep, which won the Golden Dove for best short film at the Dok Leipzig festival and the jury's special mention at the Visions du réel festival. Colette et Justin, his first feature film, interweaves family history with the story of the decolonisation of Congo. Coconut Head Génération won the Grand Prix at Cinéma du Réel (Paris).
