The Afrika Filmfestival, Pangaea and Feminist Society present ‘BlackBodyRevolt.’ An event consisting of a film screening and a roundtable discussion on Wednesday 16th March.
We kickstart this event at 6.30 pm with the screening of the film ‘Dark Girls.’ A fascinating and controversial documentary film that goes underneath the surface to explore the prejudices that dark-skinned women throughout the world face.
Afterwards the panelists discuss the effects of colourism throughout and against black bodies. This panel starts at 8.30 pm at Pangaea. The starting point of the panel is the short animated film ‘Yellow Fever’ by Kenyan filmmaker Ng’endo Mukii.
The panelists are:
Iffy Tillieu is an independent artist and curator based in Brussels. She has a large interest in feminisms, sociology, decolonization and is autodidactic.
Olga Dengo is a self-taught contemporary artist. Social inequality and political injustice motivate her to create art. The viewer witnesses urban art culture that has nothing to do with easy exoticism.
Yvoire de Rosen is an anthropologist and sociologist. Yvoire distinguishes herself through her profound knowledge on socio-anthropological issues relating to women’s bodies of afro-descendant.
Saddie Choua is an artist based in Brussels. She wants to break with the language of contemporary media, to break with the excited hunger for exoticism or pseudo-reality where an assumed dailyness is evoked.
The moderator Ashika Singh is a PhD student of Philosophy and Architecture at KU Leuven and focuses on the perception of the most marginalized in society. As a woman of mixed race heritage, she is compelled by issues that affect both race and gender. One example is the strife to fit into Western concepts of beauty.
During the entire event, from 6.30 pm until 8.30 pm the South-African web series ‘Women on sex’ by Mmabatho Montsho will be played on loop at Pangaea.
Timetable:
