Fuocoammare

Spoken: English/Italian. Subtitles: Dutch.

Samuele is a twelve year old boy who lives on the island Lampedusa in the Mediterranean Sea. Like his peers, he enjoys hanging around by the docks and climbing rocks. But his island is not like other islands. It has become the European destination for a lot of boat refugees who hope to find peace and freedom in Europe. Their journey often ends tragically, their bodies being fished out of the sea. Every day, the residents of the island witness one of the greatest human tragedies of our times.

Fuocoammare was awarded the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, never before given to a documentary.
