I Am Samuel

Samuel grew up in the countryside in Kenya, where tradition is valued above all else. Although close to his family, his father, a local pastor, holds ideologies very different from Samuel and doesn’t understand why his son has not married yet. After moving to Nairobi in search of work and a new life, Samuel falls in love with Alex and finds community and belonging. Will Samuel be able to reconcile the family’s expectations and his relationship with a man, in a country where homosexuality is a criminal offense? Filmed over five years, this intimate documentary reveals the delicate balance Samuel manages to strike between the loyalty to his family and true love.
