The Perkoa Gold mine in Burkina Faso: Opio is 13 years old and works on the surface of the mine. He only earns a ‘bag of stones’ a month. His father wants him to go to school to learn a descent profession, but he cannot afford the school fees. Opio must therefore earn the school fee himself. He asks his boss to descent into the perilous underground mine galleries, where the myth reigns that men with guts can get rich. It is almost Russian Roulette as the galleries regularly and unforeseen collapse causing a dreadful death for the young miners.
