Nawi, Dear Future Me

Thirteen-year-old Nawi is a smart teenager with a strong will. But when she is forced into a marriage, her bright future shatters. Thanks to her eagerness to learn and her perseverance, she decides to run away on her wedding night so she can attend secondary school in Nairobi. During her journey, she encounters prejudice from her family and opposition from the traditional community she lives in. Yet Nawi does not give up.

This film about hope, resistance and the importance of proper education in the fight against child marriage is set in the remote Turkana region. ‘Nawi’ was the Kenyan entry for the 97th Academy Awards. Lead actress Michelle Lemuya Ikeny won the African Movie Academy Award for Most Promising Actor thanks to her strong performance.
